Caring for people so we can all care for the planet

What are Climate Guardian destinations? It is part of the CO2 Legal Tourism initiative, a project run by the NGO Mecenas da Vida, a SeloXis partner. The NGO works in places with a tourist profile, engaging a network of participants (hotels, inns, restaurants, shops and services) in tackling the global climate crisis.

SeloXis-approved businesses participate in the project by offsetting their emissions by contributing to initiatives that improve the quality of life in their communities, making each family that joins the program a local guardian of nature and the climate. The money for the compensation will come from the tourist tax paid by visitors to these Climate Guardian destinations.

"Our aim is to help build places where everyone who is present in the territory acts synergistically for restoration, conservation, socio-economic inclusion and solutions to climate issues," explains Salvador Ribeiro.

By agreeing to take part in the program and receiving a monthly payment, families make commitments to forest conservation and regeneration. Among the commitments are: not clearing forest areas, restoring their land and plantations using the agroforestry system, not hunting wild animals, keeping school-age children in school and taking part in training for agroecological production and work parties.

There are currently five destinations where the network of tourism enterprises has committed to the Climate Guardians program: Itacaré (BA), Península de Maraú (BA), Serra Grande (BA), Trancoso (BA) and Jericoacora (CE).
