O ESG Glossary is the first step towards responsible tourism, a tool to help tourism entrepreneurs familiarize themselves with common tourism terms and acronyms. The start of a journey towards responsible tourism, aware of its fundamental role in the economy and its impact on the environment and society.

Activities in this area are responsible for 10% of the world’s GDP. In Brazil, this percentage reaches 8%. In practice, it’s money that reaches the bottom line, from the app driver to the hotel owner and the restaurant cashier. With all this impact, the industry is also being held accountable for its responsibility in the fight against poverty and climate change.

As a result, tourists are demanding that businesses be more aware of their role in this scenario, investors are more attentive to the money trail and governments are pushing for stricter regulations.

Return on investment

According to the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, for every real invested in international tourism promotion, R$20 comes into the country. “It’s an unbeatable investment,” wrote Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur, in an article published on the Ministry of Tourism‘s website. “From January to May this year, foreigners left here R$13 billion, the best result in five years. That’s income in the pockets of 7 million workers,” he says. “Tourism conserves the forest, but it also improves infrastructure, education, transportation and public safety. And it produces what Brazilians like best: happiness and jobs.”
